The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) is an entrance examination in India for various undergraduate engineering programs. The exam is conducted at two level.
1. JEE Main: JEE Main is the first stage of the engineering entrance exams in India and it is conducted for admission to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) in India. Here are key details about the JEE Main exam
- Frequency: JEE Main is conducted twice a year – usually in January and April. This provides candidates with two opportunities to take the exam and improve their scores.
- Subjects and Exam Pattern:
- The exam consists of three papers, each covering Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.
- The question paper includes a mix of multiple-choice questions (MCQs) and numerical-based questions.
- The marking scheme and the number of questions may vary for each subject.
- Eligibility Criteria: Candidates should have completed their 10+2 education with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as compulsory subjects. There are age criteria and restrictions on the number of attempts.
- Mode of Examination: JEE Main is a computer-based test (CBT). However, for candidates who have opted for the pen-and-paper-based test, the exam is conducted in a traditional pen-and-paper format.
- Result and Ranking: JEE Main results are usually declared a few weeks after the exam. Based on the scores obtained, candidates are ranked, and these ranks are used for admission to various engineering colleges.
- Normalization Procedure: Since the exam is conducted in multiple sessions, a normalization procedure is used to ensure fairness in the evaluation process. This takes into account variations in difficulty levels across different sessions.
- JEE Main scores are used for admission to undergraduate engineering programs at various National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), and other Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs).
2. JEE Advanced: JEE Advanced is the second stage of the Joint Entrance Examination, and it is conducted for admission to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) in India. Here are key details about the JEE Advanced exam:
- Eligibility Criteria: Only candidates who qualify in JEE Main are eligible to appear for JEE Advanced. There are additional eligibility criteria related to age and the number of attempts.
- Frequency: JEE Advanced is typically conducted once a year.
- Mode of Examination: The exam is conducted in a computer-based test (CBT) format.
- Number of Papers: JEE Advanced consists of two papers – Paper 1 and Paper 2. Both papers are mandatory. Each paper may cover Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.
- Exam Pattern: The exam pattern includes multiple-choice questions (MCQs) and numerical-based questions. The questions are designed to test a candidate’s understanding and analytical skills.
- Scoring and Grading: The exam is designed to evaluate the performance of candidates on a deeper level, and the marking scheme may involve partial marking for correct answers and negative marking for incorrect responses.
- Ranking: Based on the performance in JEE Advanced, candidates are assigned All India Ranks (AIRs). The ranking is used for admission to the various undergraduate engineering programs offered by the IITs.
- Seat Allocation: The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) or other appropriate authorities use the JEE Advanced ranks for seat allocation in IITs and other participating institutes.
- Counseling Process: After the declaration of results, there is a counseling and seat allocation process where candidates can choose their preferred courses and institutes based on their ranks.
